THE FRIDAY FIVE (12/6)
We're back after taking last week off to digest our Thanksgiving meals. With many 'Best of 2013' lists hitting the web this week, I have been soaking in a lot of what was heard over the past year. These are some of the standouts this week:
QUEENS OF THE STONEAGE-If I had a Tail:
From a band that oozes cool. This song is just one of many badass tunes on the album ...Like Clockwork which was released in June.
PARQUET COURTS-Stoned and Starving:
Put some headphones on and listen to this song. This Brooklyn NY band has a way of sucking you in. Caught them live this past summer and their live show just pulls you closer to the stage. There is a 30 minute documentary about the band called "Light Up Gold Road Trip" that makes you want to like the band even more. Good search to watch when you have some free time. It's worth 30 minutes.
TEMPLES-Colours to Life:
I'm happy to hear more of this psychedelic sound coming back. These english dudes first album will come out early next year, but this is a taste of whats to come. I dig it.
JAGWAR MA-The Throw:
A blend of Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Janes Addiction and that psychedelic that I love. This is from the debut album from the Sydney Australia trio.
T. REX-Life Is Strange:
Obviously not a new song but you will find this on the Dallas Buyers Club soundtrack, which is a fantastic movie and should be listed in the 'Best of Movies for 2013'. Either way, it's T. Rex, it's a great song and when I saw the movie last week, I made me want to to dig out my T. Rex cd's and listen to them nonstop.

THE FRIDAY FIVE (11/22)
All right, all right, all right. The Friday Five is back, just in time to kick off your weekend. Enjoy!
THE CAVE SINGERS:
I wrote about this Seattle band after seeing them open up for Fleet Foxes a few years back. Really enjoy them a lot but haven't had a chance to catch them live since then. When I last saw them they were a three piece but I see they have since added a fourth member, oddly enough a member of Fleet Foxes. I shazamed a few of their songs this week that are all from their recent album Naomi, which was released in the spring. I couldn't seem to pick just one of their songs so I figured I would post their whole 25 minute performance from KEXP earlier this year. Just for the record, should they ever do a movie on Joe Cocker, I nominate lead singer Pete Quirk to play him.
BARRENCE WHITFIELD & THE SAVAGES-Corner Man:
Caught these guys on an episode of Jools Holland from a couple weeks ago. I knew nothing about this guy and his band but the performance was awesome. Turns out Barrence was rockin' out all the way back in the 80's and is now signed to one of my favorite labels, Bloodshot Records, who recently released Dig Thy Savage Soul, their first album since 1995. This is a splendid punk-soul and R&B smoothie. Drink it down.
KINGS OF LEON-Temple:
They lost me with their last album but from everything I have heard from their new cd Mechanical Bull, I'm interested again.
PHOSPHORESCENT-Ride On/Right On:
I shazamed this tune a few weeks ago and every time I hear it, I want to shazam it again. For some reason, it's just so damn catchy. The beat reminds of of another song but I can't seem to put my finger on it. Fleetwood Mac maybe? Anyway, I've seen this Brooklyn based band on a number of occasions opening for other bands. Always thought they were interesting. This song is off their awesomely named album Muchacho, which came out earlier this year. Be prepared to be hooked.
JOHN PRINE-Spanish Pipedream:
John is a legendary country folk singer dating way back to the early 70's. I read yesterday that he has to undergo surgery for lung cancer, which is unrelated to the cancer that he beat back in the late 90's. Keep this beautiful man in your prayers.

THE FRIDAY FIVE (11/16)
And for the second week in a row, five becomes six. Here we go...
MAZZY STAR-California:
They have returned this summer to release Seasons of Your Day, their first cd since 1996. They haven't strayed from the haunting yet dreamy sound we have are used to, and that is a good thing. Love this.
VOLCANO CHOIR-Acetate:
I heard this song numerous times during the week and every time I thought it was Modest Mouse or Bon Iver. Well, I was halfway right. Turns out, the band is a collaboration between Justin Vernon from Bon Iver and a band called Collections of Colonies of Bees. I haven't listened to any other songs of theirs, but this one stood out of songs I heard this week.
SAVAGES-She Will:
All girl art-post-punk band from London. Very cool intense music from their debut album Silence Yourself. Awesome.
BEST COAST-This Lovely Morning:
The west coast is the best coast from this California band. This tune from their EP Fade Away which was just released a few weeks ago.
EDITORS-Smokers Outside The Hospital:
First song from their second album, An End Has a Start, which was released back in 2007. I shazamed this song because I forgot all about them and wanted to remind myself to start listening to them again. I had seen them a few times live and really liked them but I guess I just forgot about them. I've always like this band and their sound. Looks like they have put out 2 cd's since this release, one as recently as this past summer. Looks like I have some catching up to do.
THE YOUNG-HOLT UNLIMITED-Soulful Strut:
Ending this week with some cool old school soulful jazz that was released 45 years ago this month. YHU were formed out of the Ramsey Lewis Jazz Trio and released 12 cd's between 1966 and 1973. This jam was the stand out from all of their releases.

THE FRIDAY FIVE (11/9)
I didn't get a chance to post yesterday so THE FRIDAY FIVE turns into THE SATURDAY SIX for this week. Do you like what you hear?
BLITZEN TRAPPER-Thirsty Man:
It seems like every time Blitzen Trapper puts out a cd, there are 2 or 3 songs I hear that I really enjoy yet for some reason, I never dive deeper into the cd or go see them in concert. I shazamed this song earlier in the week and was lucky enough to hear them perform on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic yesterday. This song is from their 7th (the first 3 were self released) cd 'VII' which was released early in October. Very, very cool stuff. Next time they come thru, I will not be missing them.
Also, I need to give a shout out to 89.3 The Current, which is the Minnesota Public Radio station that this video below comes from. The videos of their in-studio performances are always fantastic.
ARCADE FIRE-Afterlife:
Unless you have been living in a cave for the last month or two, you know that Arcade Fire recently released their much hyped fourth cd Reflektor. Everywhere I look this cd is reviewed and they seem to have been on every talk show possible to promote it. I'll be honest and say that I haven't yet listened to Reflektor, read any of the reviews and only caught their performance on the Colbert Report which was just OK. Actually I did read two short reviews. One was a text from my friend Karen, who loves Arcade Fire. It was a short text. She said it was horrible. The other was a review of the reivew's, which said the reviews were mixed, and that's why I don't read many reviews. Arcade Fire are in a tough boat here. Expectations are high. They are a band that average music fans feel they should like due to all the hype. Regardless of all the buzz, I really like this song a lot. The video is from the Youtube Music Awards which happened last week. I think Spike Jonze may have directed it.
PAUL SIMON-BIKO:
This is a very cool cover of Peter Gabriel's song about the black South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko. The song is off the Scratch My Back/And I'll Scratch Your's which sees Peter doing covers of various bands and bands covering of his songs. Its a cool concept but the result isn't that overwhelming from what I have heard so far, then again, in true Peter Gabriel fashion, his renditions are very different and unique. As far as the covers of his songs, there are a few gems, including Randy Newman doing 'Big Time', Elbow's beautiful version of 'Mercy Street' and this version of Biko. I've had the pleasure of seeing Peter Gabriel live on many occasions and there are very few songs you will experience in concert that are as moving as when he performs BIKO. I really enjoy Paul Simon's version here and the addition of strings is a really nice touch.
BAND OF SKULLS-Death By Diamonds and Pearls:
After hearing this song, the only conclusion I can come up with is that everyone should have the Band Of Skulls in their life. Super cool stuff from their 2009 debut cd Baby Darling Doll Face Honey.
BROKEN BELLS-Holding On For Life:
The first single from the yet to be released cd After The Disco by the super collaboration of James Mercer (The Shins) and Danger Mouse (everything he touches is gold...). This will be their second cd together. Very cool mellow, psychedelic, retro vibe.

How do you categorize the sound of this Boston band? On their website, they mention they started out as 'free country' band with intentions to play "country music in an improvised avant-garde style-like Loretta Lynne meets Ornette Coleman." Not they just say they are a "pop band leaning very heavily on soul and rock with hook-y writing." Whatever the sound, I love it. Reminds me a bit of early Hall & Oats. (note-I heard one of their songs, tried to shazam it and it didn't work, so I just wrote down the name of the band to remember the band).

THE FRIDAY FIVE (11/1)
Kicking November off with 5 great songs that I have Shazamed this week. First a sad note. The music world ended October in a sad way with the passing of Lou Reed. His music career started in the late '60's (?!) as a member of the highly influential band The Velvet Underground and recorded probably his most notable song 'Walk on the Wild Side' as a solo artist in 1972. Crazy to think that this guy had been putting out music since before I was born and his most recent cd was a collaboration with Metallica. While he has moved on to a better place, he left us with a masterful collection of music that totals almost 40 cd's. Rest In Peace Lou.
And now, The Friday Five.
WILD BELLE-It's Too Late:
Led by a brother and sister duo from Chicago, this song is from their debut cd, Isles, which was released this past March. Lead singer Natalie and her multi-instrumentalist brother Elliot draw influences from reggae, funk, jazz and soul producing a super cool and sexy groove. Real good stuff. The rest of the cd sounds just as good!
J. RODDY WALSTON & THE BUSINESS-Heavy Bells:
I have a buddy that has been telling me about this Baltimore via Tennessee band for the past few years so I was really happy when I heard this track off of their recently released cd Essential Tremors. Its just great gritty rock & roll.
LUSCIOUS JACKSON-"#1 Bum":
Yes, you see this right. The ladies of Luscious Jackson are back with their first release in almost 14 years. The cd titled Magic Hour, comes out next week and is getting some great reviews. From the sound of this funky tune (and catchy video), they haven't skipped a beat. Welcome back!
KODAKID-Shake Skin:
A soulful blues rock & roll band from Waterford, Ireland (yes, Waterford Crystal originated here). They have a 3 song ep that you can download for free from their website. It includes this song 'Shake Skin' which I find very addicting. Looks like they have full length cd coming out later this year. An easy comparison is that of the Black Keys.
FIRST AID KIT-Emmylou:
The sweetest song you will hear this month is performed by these two sisters from Sweden. This is from their second cd Lions Roar which is filled with songs just as beautiful.

THE FRIDAY FIVE (10/25)
A day early...
DEX ROMWEBER DUO-Death Of Me:
If you've never heard of Dexter Romweber, well you have been missing out on an amazing collection of music that dates way back to the mid 80's as a member of the highly influential rock n' roll/rockabilly band the Flat Duo Jets. Dex's output of music includes 10 cd's with the Flat Duo Jets, 6 'solo' cds and 3 as part of the Dex Romweber Duo which includes his sister Sara on drums. He also plays with a band called the New Romans which involves up to 10 members and play/rehearse in his garage every Thursday night. This song, Death Of Me, is from their 2011 Is that You In the Blue release.
THE STRYPES-What a Shame:
An Irish garage rock/rhythm & blues band that is made up of all teenagers! This song is from their debut cd Snapshot, that was released just last month. Definitely working the 60's mod vibe and doing it well.
B-52's-Private Idaho:
This song is a real gem in so many ways. My favorite of all time from the B-52's. I get way too excited every time I hear this song and when it came on the radio this week, I almost crashed the car. Find this on their 1980 cd 'Wild Planet'.
ARCTIC MONKEYS-R U Mine:
From their most recent release called AM. This band is awesome and love to see them continue to grow their sound. Joshua Homme, from Queens of the Stoneage, has worked with them on their last couple cd's and that has produced this heavier sound. Well done lads.
MAX SEDGLEY-Slowly:
Max is a British DJ and producer. This song is from 2006. I loved the song when I first heard it but the video takes it to a different level.

THE FRIDAY FIVE (10/18)
First off, a big Happy Birthday to Chuck Berry. One of the great pioneers of rock n' roll is 87 years old today!! Big ups to you Chuck!

UB40-One in Ten:
This song is from their second of eighteen (?!?!?) albums. The album is called Present Arms and was released in 1981. The song has to do with the percentage of workforce filing for unemployment (9.6%) in West Midlands in the summer of 1981, when the song was released. The video is them performing the song on Top of Pops that same year.
KOPECKY FAMILY BAND-Heartbeat:
Not a family. Horrible video. Incredibly addicting song. You've been warned.
IDES OF MARCH-Vehicle:
Its songs like this that makes Shazam so great. I've probably heard this song more than 1,000 times over my lifetime but never knew the band. I think I just always just thought it was Chicago. Nope, its the Ides of March who oddly enough are from Berwyn, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.
FLETCHER C. JOHNSON-Messin Up My Mind:
I actually Shazamed this song twice in the last week, I think both times from Little Stevens Underground Garage station on Sirius. These dudes look to be from Brooklyn and much like Kopecky Family Band, the video almost makes you want to not like them. The epic ending saves it.
NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS-Turn Up Satan:
This song is from their sixteenth album, World Boogie Is Coming, which was released last month. This 3 man band from Hernado, Mississippi has been tooling around since 2000. I've never really thought to listen to their music but damn, I've been missing out. This is some killer music. Sixteen releases? Where the hell have I been? I've got some catching up to do. Loving this sound. A few cool tidbits about this band. One guy plays an electric washboard as well as something called a 'lowebow', also called a cigar box guitar. This is a cigar box with two rod sticking out, one for one bass string and one for one acoustic string. It was created for a one-man band in mind.

UB40-One in Ten:
This song is from their second of eighteen (?!?!?) albums. The album is called Present Arms and was released in 1981. The song has to do with the percentage of workforce filing for unemployment (9.6%) in West Midlands in the summer of 1981, when the song was released. The video is them performing the song on Top of Pops that same year.

IDES OF MARCH-Vehicle:
Its songs like this that makes Shazam so great. I've probably heard this song more than 1,000 times over my lifetime but never knew the band. I think I just always just thought it was Chicago. Nope, its the Ides of March who oddly enough are from Berwyn, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.
FLETCHER C. JOHNSON-Messin Up My Mind:
I actually Shazamed this song twice in the last week, I think both times from Little Stevens Underground Garage station on Sirius. These dudes look to be from Brooklyn and much like Kopecky Family Band, the video almost makes you want to not like them. The epic ending saves it.
NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS-Turn Up Satan:
This song is from their sixteenth album, World Boogie Is Coming, which was released last month. This 3 man band from Hernado, Mississippi has been tooling around since 2000. Starting something new. In an effort to be more regular with my activity, every Friday I'll be posting the top 5 songs I have Shazamed for the week. And away we go:
PETER KING-Freedom Dance:
A Nigerian multi-instrumentalist from the 70's. He performed a blend of Afro-beat, funk, soul and jazz similar to that of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen. This song is from his album Shango. I've become obsessed with this type of music over the years and you can find some amazing compilations such as the Nigeria 70 collections, African Scream Contest and Nigerian Rock Special.
LA LUZ-Sure As Spring:
Four girls from Seattle playing 60's inspired surf rock. How cool is that?! From the looks of it, they have only been together as a band for a year and just released their first EP titled Damp Face.
MEL BRITT-She'll Come Running Back:
Struggling to find out much about this guy other than he is from Detroit and was part of the Northern Soul Revival. In an article that I read regarding Northern Soul, iconic British soul DJ Ian Levine said "Northern Soul is about the artists that wanted to be the Motown sound but weren't." Mel died earlier this year.
LL COOL J-Going Back To Cali:

BIG DADDY KANE
Last night I caught bits and pieces of a documentary on Big Daddy Kane. I'm not sure of the name of it or even what channel it was on but I kept flipping back in between innings of the baseball game as it was fantastic. I had to pull up a couple of his classic videos. Rap just isn't what it used to be. Kane is one of the best.
CLAIRY BROWNE & THE BANGIN' RACKETTES
If you love Amy Winehouse and the badass soul that she revived, check out Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes. This 9-piece band from Melbourne, Austrailia have only been around a few years but have a fantastic sound that has been generating a well deserved buzz. Their debut album, Baby Caught The Bus, came out 2 years ago in their home country and was finally released in the states earlier this year. Heavy on soul and doo-wop with a touch of blues, the album is a party from beginning to end. The band gained attention last year in the states when the lead single 'Love Letter' featured in a Heineken TV commercial with Browne also appearing in the ad. They are currently on tour all over the USA thru December so be sure to catch them and take along some friends. They will thank you for it. LINE & CIRCLE
I came across a song called Roman Ruins by the band Line & Circle recently and was instantly hooked by their early REM/80's alternative rock sound. Digging a little deeper, there really isn't that much about this band out there, but here is a little bit of what I found out. They are a group of brothers and friends from the midwest that are now based in LA. They have been on numerous buzz band lists and write up's (KEXP, KCRW, Rolling Stone, NPR Music, AOL/Spinner, Stereogum and on and on and on). Not bad for a band that only has 2 songs on itunes! With all of this buzz I can only assume/hope that a full length release and tour are in the not so distant future?!?! Until then, see below for their Roman Ruins video and a short concert they performed for KEXP at CMJ this past fall. ENJOY!

SOUND CITY
The movie has a two part feel with the first half taking viewers thru the history of the studio, what made it so special and what led to its eventual closing in 2011. The second half of the movie centers around Grohl's purchase of the Neve from Sound City, installing it in his own recording studio and gathering together a cast of musicians connected to Sound City to record an album of new songs thru the legendary console.
Sound City is full of interviews from legendary musicians providing viewers insight into the recording process. Watching this movie will make you want to listen to more music. Watching this movie will make you appreciate the process it takes to make the music you listen to. Watching this movie will make you listen a little deeper next time you put on those headphones. Watching this movie will make you thankful for places like Sound City Studios and people like Dave Grohl.

The Treetop Flyers are a five piece British band (4 Brits and 1 American) that create a heavy dose of 70's southern California americana soul. Named after a Stephen Stills song, they blend beautiful harmonies that touch on CSNY, Eagles, America, Gram Parsons and even a little Fleetwood Mac.
They arrived at Glasslands warehouse/artspace touring behind their beautiful debut 'The Mountain Moves'. From first listen, you will become obsessed with 'Things Will Change', which could easily be mistaken for a song from America. They stretch out a bit as 'Houses are Burning' and 'Picture Show' sound like a country fried 'Don't Fear the Reaper', while 'Waiting on You', 'Roses in the Yard' and 'Making Time' blend mellow country soul. 'Postcards' adds a little doo-wap and album closer 'Is it all Worth it' draws some inspiration from Mumford and Sons. Of all their songs, 'Haunted House' was the one that stood out most during their hour long set tonight. Clocking in at 6:52 on cd, they stretched it out to well over 8 minutes live driving us to peaks and valleys before closing it out in a long frenzied finish. The Treetop Flyers are blessed with an enormous amount of talent. Their music may seem oddly familiar yet it is new and fresh. 'The Mountain Moves' is a classic FULL album that should be the soundtrack for your next road trip. It sounds equally as cool sitting on your porch on a beautiful sunny day as it does watching a storm roll in. They've got talent to spare. Considering the fact that the next concert they would be playing after tonight would be Glastonbury, I'm sure this is just the beginning of great things to come for the Treetop Flyers.

British buzz band Palma Violets came to play MHW tonight and a birthday party broke out. Led by duel lead singers Chilli Jesson and Sam Fryer, the band blazed thru their much hyped debut album 180 which blends garage, soul, psychedelic and rock into epic sing along anthems. The Palma Violets built a reputation as a great live band thru weekly shows at small art studio in south London called Studio 180. Only those 'in the know' found the door leading to these parties but word quickly spread and next thing you know Zane Lowe is spinning their single 'Step up for the Cool Cats' on his BBC1 Radio Show, NME chooses 'Best of Friends' as track of the year for 2012 and they get signed to Rough Trade records all before putting out their first full length.

They certainly lived up to their reputation of a great live band tonight. Chilli is one of the more enjoyable lead singers I have seen in a long time. With a youthful exuberance and a badass attitude, he owns the stage and leads the band swinging around his bass guitar. The band, which also includes fantastic drummer Will Doyle and keyboard player Peter Mayhew, constantly engaged the crowd, bringing everyone closer together almost shrinking the size of the venue so we felt as if we were in one of their weekly Studio 180 parties. Songs like 'Best of Friends', 'Step up for the Cool Cats', 'We Found Love', 'Last of the Summer Wine' and 'Chicken Dippers' all got kicked up a few notches. One guy, feeling the power of the Palma Violets live, thrusts his crutches into the air as if say, 'I CAN WALK'! For the encore, the band invited opening bands and friends on stage while they presented Chilli with a cake for his birthday. As to be expected, cake frosting started flying around the stage followed by beer and anything else they could get their hands on before breaking into a cover of The Hot Nasties 'Invasion of the Tribbles' leading everyone singing along with them 'oh yeah! oh yeah! oh yeah!' A messy birthday party broke out on stage and we all became part of it. So goes a Palma Violets show. Happy Birthday Chilli. You and your band have a great year ahead of you. Thanks for a great show.

Fu Manchu spent the month of April blazing a trail across the United States re-visiting their classic 1997 album 'The Action Is Go' and tonight they brought the rock to the Bowery Ballroom. I am constantly amazed that this band isn't bigger than they are. They have been putting out music since 1990 and their catalog consists of 10 solid studio albums. When explaining their sound, the words 'stoner rock' are always included. Listening to their lyrics and looking over any of their albums and merchandise artwork you will find the bands love for muscle cars, custom vans, skateboarding and science fiction. This is rock that kicks ass. It makes you want to grow your hair out, put on a bandana and get lost in yourself. Its Dazed and Confused all over again. More people need Fu Manchu in their lives. Tonight they went full throttle to kick everyones asses blazing thru all 14 tracks in order from 'The Action Is Go' before treating the crowd to an encore of classics leaving our heads and ear drums screaming with pleasure. It was classic Fu show. As Jack Blacks character Dewey Finn would say in 'The School of Rock', they melted our faces.
We arrived at the show a little late missed Vagina Panther, the first of two opening bands. I know nothing about Vagina Panther other than the fact that their name is pretty awesome.
Second openers Bloodnstuff were the revelation of the evening. My friends and I were all arriving, milling around and getting our beers when it hit us that the two dudes on stage were ripping it up. This two man band from Minneapolis left us wanting more and pissed off that we arrived late missinf more than half of their set. Their Facebook page lists their type of music as 'post-rock'. Not really sure what that means. I just know that they kicked ass and were a great warm up for Fu

GOOGA MOOGA
For the 2013 edition, organizers promised that all the kinks have been worked out and this years festival would be outstanding. One new twist to this festival was the addition of a third day, which would be an opening night paid concert with The Darkness, Flaming Lips and Yeah Yeah Yeahs gracing the stage. If you purchased a ticket to this opening night you were also given a ticket to your choice of Saturday or Sundays festivities. I didn't make it to Fridays show but from what I heard, The Darkness hit the stage around 4:45 pm, Flaming Lips a little after 6 and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were finished around 8. That's tough for a New York crowd to make it out to Brooklyn by 5 or even 6 on a Friday before our 'summers hours' have kicked in. Not sure why the show had to be done by 8 each night but I assume being a city park has something to do with it.
As with last years festival, I was given a ticket a few days before hand and went on Saturday. Also, as with last year, I had a great time. Light rain much of the afternoon kept a good chunk of ticket holders away making it a breeze entering the venue, getting food and drink as well as getting good views of the bands. There seemed to be some confusion as to the beer/wine tents in which you had to purchase a cup for $2 to gain a bigger selection of drinks while you could also purchase a smaller selection at other booths around the grounds while not needing the $2 cup. Food selections were broad and included options from restaurants from around the NYC area. I went with the 'Phat Thai' from Pok Pok, a small Thai restaurant located on the Lower East Side. This shit was spicy but delicious so thankfully I had easy access numerous cold IPA's from an upstate brewery to wash it down.
As for music, the selection also varied. As we walked in Father John Misty was on the stage. While I love his cd, this guy is super annoying in concert as you can read in a previous post. Pearl and the Beard were a 3 piece which included 2 girls (oddly neither of them named Pearl) and a guy with a beard. They had a singer/songwriter type vibe and the lead singer sang and played a snare drum standing up which for some reason seemed kind of cool. The star of the day came up next on the main stage and that is a man called Lorenzo Cherubini, otherwise known as Jovanotti. Where have I been? This guy was awesome. This italian has been around since the late 80's, churning out 12 albums that blend hip hop, funk, ska, reggae, word music and even rap. He has been called Italy's first rapper but he is so much more. He is an amazing performer that sings in italian, english and spanish. He gave shout outs to the early NYC rappers that influenced him along with professing his love for the Beastie Boys during a cover of 'no sleep til brooklyn'. It's performers like Jovanotti that make me love music so much. I knew nothing about this guy, he comes out and blows me away to the point that I want to know everything about him and hear all of his music. Truly inspiring. Headliners Matt & Kim were a big disappointment for me. I expected a lot more as I have heard great things about them live. While they do their best to make their performance exciting, it just seemed very boring and more of a schtick. Less then halfway thru their set I headed to the second stage to encounter a small dance party going on as Red Baraat were on stage. These nine brooklynites play something called Bhangra Funk Dhol 'n' Bass which blends jazz, funk, hip hop in a crazy party vibe. Wow! So much fun and definitely a must see next time they play NYC.
Unfortunately for Googa Mooga, the rains came down hard during the night into Sunday and they were forced to cancel day 3 of the festival. Changes made from year one to year two were positive. Hopefully they are able to continue and we see an even better year three in 2014 and beyond as you can't beat a day in the park complete with great food, great drink, great music and great friends.

RICHIE HAVENS RIP
Richie Havens died last week at the age of 72. I first became aware of him, as did many others, from his legendary performance from the WOODSTOCK '69 music festival. I remember being very young watching the WOODSTOCK movie numerous times on PBS and his performance stood out more than any of the other bands. As the story goes, Richie was scheduled to be the second performer of the festival but was moved to first because scheduled openers, Sweetwater, were stuck in traffic. Originally planning to play a 4 song set, those in attendance got more than they bargained for as the event organizers urged him to play on due to more performers being stuck in festival traffic. His set is rumored to have lasted over 2 1/2 hours and after returning for several encores he basically ran out of songs to play. Returning to the stage one last time, Richie improvised the spiritual "Motherless Child" into "Freedom", the legendary jam that would set the tone for the rest of the festival and a generations to come.

ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT-4/4/13-Le Trabendo, Paris France
Oh my, this is juicy. My wife and I decided to go to Paris to celebrate her birthday. Much to my excitement (and maybe hers), it just so happened that the first part of Rocket From The Crypt's reunion tour was scheduled to roll thru Paris at the same time. Hands down, RFTC are one of my favorite bands of all time. Their live shows are legendary with a blaring horn section and in your face rock 'n roll led by their always charismatic lead singer John Reis AKA 'Speedo'. RFTC called it quits to their storied career in 2005, ending with a sold out show on Halloween night in their hometown of San Diego so the six members could concentrate on the many other projects they were involved in. Rumors started to swirl of a potential reunion in late 2011 after the band got together to record a song and appear on Yo Gabba Gabba, a show in which Speedo has a recurring role as 'Swami', which is also happens to be the name of his record label. Much to everybody's excitement the news of their reunion was confirmed in late 2012 and a short european tour was announced for the spring of this year.
Which brings us to Paris, Thursday, April 4th when RFTC brought their matching fancy outfits to Le Trebendo in northeast Paris. This was my first show outside of the USA so I was anxious of what to expect. We arrived to a mix of languages being spoken and after a few conversations we discovered that people, many sporting 'rocket tattoo's', had traveled from Germany, Belgium and England for this much anticipated show. Our Parisian friend that joined us, told me that the only way you would be from Paris and be at this show is if you spoke english well enough to understand the band. He had the feeling that not many people at the show were from Paris. Regardless, the 700 capacity venue was full of excitement by the time the band his the stage.
Its was no surprise what we would hear tonight. With 7 studio albums and handful worth of EP's to choose from, any real Rocket fan could easily pick 20 songs that would make up the bulk of the set list. The real anticipation would be how they would sound after 8 years off? In one word, awesome. The band hit the stage with Speedo immediately let us know he was in the mood telling us that he was "horny" before tearing into an almost 25 song career spanning set that included Born in 69, Young Livers, On A Rope, Don't Darlene, Made For You, Dick On A Dog, I'm Not Invisible, Middle, Bring Us Bullets and more. As always Speedo led the charge constantly chatting up the crowd, discussing coyote's, the power of rock n roll, having fun with hecklers, reminiscing about their first gig in Paris in front of less than 25 people and even dumping a beer out on a large man in the front row. The band has not lost a step in their years apart. The horn section (Apollo 9 & JC 2000) blared their horns constantly encouraging the crowd with background vocals while guitar & bass players (ND & Petey X) led the charge behind Speedo. Ruby Mars, one of rock's best kept secrets, pounded the drums in his always energetic and entertaining fashion
